Hypnobirthing and Pregnancy Relaxation

Frequently Asked Questions

When and where do the classes run?

Cambridge Road Church, Cambridge Rd, Moseley, Birmingham B13 9UE. It is warm, inviting, serene and tranquil- perfect for your hypnobirthing group sessions and pregnancy relaxation classes.

Parking is available and the location is easily accessible, being on the border of Kings Heath and Moseley; ideally placed for lunch or a cake with your new parent buddies. Group courses run over 3x Monday evenings, or over a weekend.

One- to- one courses are held either virtually or in the comfort of your own home. The sessions are tailor-made and can be organised to fit around your working/home/ life commitments on weekdays, weekends, and evenings, subject to availability.

How much does a course cost?

Each hypnobirthing or pregnancy relaxation course is set at a different price depending on the number of sessions you need and whether you would like one- to- one or group classes. Head to my main page for the most current price listings. Also see the Privacy Policy and Terms and Conditions linked on my main page for further information.

When is the best time to start a hypnobirthing course?

Any time during your pregnancy, ideally between 12 and 34 weeks. Before or after this is fine too. Get in touch; there are options for you.

I’ve done an antenatal class, like NCT. Will there be lots of repetition?

No. Hypnobirthing works very well alongside traditional antenatal classes. Very little to none of the content of most antenatal classes is focussed solely on the birth; the mind-set work in particular. Hypnobirthing is unique, because it incorporates birthing tools and techniques, relaxation, mind-set and empowerment work and of course hypnosis. Nothing will be duplicated. There are courses of different lengths and styles, as well as tailor-made one- to- one options to meet your requirements.

What is a Discovery Call?

This is a no obligation, free, 20 minute call for you to ask me anything! I’ll no doubt ask you questions too and we can work out your goals together. By the end of the call we will all know what you hope to achieve while working with me.

Does my birth partner need to come to all the classes?

The support of your birth partner is crucial, and research shows that they significantly contribute to the positive birthing experience you are looking for. It’s essential for birth partners to come along to hypnobirthing classes; so they understand birth exactly as you do; so that they know your choices and preferences; so they can fully advocate for you when the time comes. They have an incredibly important job.

If your partner can’t attend, talk to me about one-to-one sessions where I can adjust the sessions to make sure they can come for the very essentials. I run ‘Pregnancy Relaxation’ sessions too. These are beautiful sessions, just for the birthing woman.

Does hypnobirthing actually work?

Yes - I’m your biggest proof here - and a whole community of women who have experienced more straightforward, more comfortable and quicker births. The benefits of hypnobirthing are now widely accepted, with the NHS and many hospital trusts recommending hypnobirthing as a way of encouraging easier labour with less need for intervention or pain relief.

Why does it work? And how?

Knowledge is power. Hypnobirthing teaches you about what happens to your body during birth; and it surprises me every day how little we actually know! Hypnobirthing teaches you to tap into the mind-body connection. It introduces you to some usable and simple tools of self-hypnosis. You learn effective breathing and the importance of beneficial birth partner support.

Are the classes 'official' hypnobirthing?

Of course. I completed my training in Spring of 2023 and have worked with lovely local mums and dads-to-be since. The training course is accredited by FEDANT from the ‘Love your Birth’ Training School. My sessions are 5* rated on Google. I’ve been in the teaching profession for over 15 years, so you’re in the best of hands. I love this job! I also work as an associate for N.E.S.T delivering breastfeeding, postnatal and maternity care courses.

What is hypnosis?

Hypnosis is that focussed state we experience all of the time, when you are able to drive a car and reach your destination without even knowing how you got there. The state when you can read a page of a book, but aren’t conscious of the words you have just read. It’s that state when you’re almost asleep, but not quite yet. In this focused state, I will be using ‘stories’ as guided meditation giving you positive suggestions. These suggestions make you feel calm, controlled, confident and excited about your upcoming birth. You will feel varying degrees of aware and ‘awake’. You will always feel in control of your choices throughout the hypnosis sessions. This is not a stage show and I cannot make you believe or do anything you don’t want to!

Is there anything to stop me doing hypnobirthing?

If you have a heart condition, epilepsy, sleep disorders or severe asthma you should consult with your doctor. Never use the hypnosis tools while you are driving or operating machinery, or under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Consult your GP if you suffer from a psychotic illness or anything else you might be concerned about.

How will I feel during hypnosis?

Everyone experiences hypnosis differently. Some people feel very awake and aware, others forget what was said or feel as though they forgot where they were. Others are somewhere in between or drift between both.

What if ‘the unexpected’ happens during my birth?

Hypnobirthing is for every birth. Whatever your birth looks like; home birth, birth in a pool, caesarean, with/without medical interventions, ‘straightforward’, a little more ‘complicated’… the list goes on; you will be able to utilise from the benefits of hypnobirthing. Whatever happens, hypnobirthing helps you feel as happy, relaxed and positive as possible.

I’m having a caesarean birth. Could I use hypnobirthing?

Yes. Hypnobirthing helps you feel calm and manage fear and pain. It helps you frame your birth positively so you look back on your beautiful belly birth with the happiest of memories.

I want pain medication and I want to be in hospital. Is hypnobirthing for me?

Yes. Hypnobirthing is for every birth. You will learn about the choices and options ahead of you to be sure you feel happy with every decision. Most importantly, you will learn to let go of any fears - perfect for every birth plan! Hypnobirthing tools and techniques can be used alongside medicalised pain relief in any birth environment.

Are there any reasons why it might not work for me?

It’s important to be open minded about hypnobirthing and be willing to take on the positive suggestions. If you believe it, you will achieve it; this is so true. You will want to practise the hypnosis tools and techniques to feel completely prepared. If you do, you will be able to trust, completely, in your mind body connection, and you will trust your birthing instincts when the time comes.

Can you guarantee that the birth will be pain free and easy?

If you are expecting ‘pain free’ or ‘easy’, hypnobirthing is not promising this. Hypnobirthing will help you manage pain through understanding the sensations of birth. Hypnobirthing will help you feel calm, in control and positive. Hypnobirthing will help you make choices in your ‘birth plan’ to stack the odds in your favour of achieving the birth you want. Hypnobirthing will empower you with knowledge to make the best choices in the maternity care system.

I’ve heard people say, “I did hypnobirthing and it was useless!”

Well, I would ask - what were their goals? Were they realistic? And did they fully commit? Did they download something and then tune-out of the video? Was their birth partner on board?

It’s important to know your own expectations and to understand what you can achieve. Like all things, preparation is key. You will need to practice hypnobirthing skills regularly and you will need to commit to the mind-set work. What an amazing thing to do. Preparation is so much more than having the cot, or the steriliser or the other ‘things’ for the baby. Add preparing for the birth to your list; you can do this! A lack of belief, motivation and commitment to the hypnobirthing journey will impact on its effectiveness. This is why I suggest you work with a highly qualified professional such as me, who will keep you motivated, answer your questions and tailor the sessions to your needs - all things a cheap download cannot do.

Do I need to buy any books?

No, this is a full hypnobirthing course so everything you need is included. If you love to read, I can suggest complimentary materials after the course. Reading a load of hypnobirthing books beforehand, might spoil your course! The 10 hour course covers many aspects of antenatal preparation so you may find you don’t even need to book any other courses after this one. If you have already attended an antenatal class or are planning on doing both, well done - amazing preparation, you will still benefit from the full course, or shorter options are available.

Can I share the resources (like the MP3s) with my friends or family?

Please do signpost people to my Instagram, Facebook page or website. Spread the word… hypnobirthing is too good not to share! But no, I’m afraid you will not have permission to share any of the materials directly.
